Is Your Sealed Japanese Pokemon Booster Box Real?
How collectors check a sealed Japanese Pokemon booster box before they pay. What to look at, and what a photo cannot tell you.
Fake sealed boxes are the reason people get nervous about Japanese product. The good news is that most fakes give themselves away fast.
Collectors check three things first. The wrap, the print, and the barcode. You can check all three with the box in your hands in about a minute.
Look at the wrap
Real factory wrap is tight. It pulls in at the corners and does not slide around.
Look near the corners for small perforation marks. Factory wrap has them. A box that was opened and re-wrapped by hand usually has a smooth, sealed edge instead.
Loose wrap is a warning, not proof. Heat moves plastic, and boxes travel. Treat it as the first question, not the answer.
Look at the print
Real print is crisp. The edges of letters are sharp, even up close.
Fakes often get the art right and the small text wrong. Check the fine print for odd fonts, blurry edges, or spelling that looks off. Compare it to a photo of a known real box from the same set.
Check the barcode
Japanese boxes carry a JAN barcode. The number should match the set the box says it is.
A barcode from a different set is a real problem. So is a sticker sitting on top of the printed one.
What a photo cannot tell you
Online, you are trusting someone else's camera. A photo hides the wrap tension. It hides how the seams feel. It hides a re-wrap done well.
That is the whole argument for buying it in person. Hold the box. Turn it over. Look at the seal and the barcode with someone who handles this product every week.

If you already bought one
Do not open it yet. An unopened box can be returned or disputed. An opened one usually cannot.
Take clear photos of the wrap, the corners, and the barcode first. Then bring it in, or send the photos to the seller and ask a direct question about the seal.
